EEF-2024: Institute for Transport Economics and Development Plans Projects Through 2050

While the transport sector is developing plans through 2030, the Institute for the Economy and Development of Transport is looking even further ahead, with strategic plans extending to 2050, said Irina Magnushevskaya, Director General of IEDT, at the Eastern Economic Forum.

The throughput capacity of the Eastern Railway Polygon is projected to reach 270 million tons by 2032. According to Irina Magnushevskaya, considering changes in cargo structure, the growth of container traffic, and corresponding increases in train weight, this capacity will soon be insufficient.

"When we reach 270 million tons by 2032, accounting for the growth in export cargo, I believe we'll be discussing 300 million tons and even 350 million tons. And this is entirely realistic," emphasized head of IEDT.

IEDT, which focuses on the strategic development of the railway sector, is preparing for these new capacities and proactively planning for the industry's future. Together with Russian Railways (RZD), the institute is discussing projections up to 2050. "Right now, we are working on projects that will need to start in 2042," said Irina Magnushevskaya.
