Electric trains are taking over cities

Novosibirsk, as the largest city in Siberia (the agglomeration population is 2.3 million people), has special prospects from the point of view of developing the movement of intracity electric trains. Today it is one of the growth points for suburban transportation, according to the Express Suburban company.

Price and speed

If previously the share of suburban railway transport in the total passenger traffic in Novosibirsk was 22%, now it is 30%. And this is not the limit: according to forecasts by the Institute for Transport Economics and Development (IEDT), in the future it may increase to 59%.

“We are growing transportation within the city, and many consider the electric train as an urban mode of transport. The first reason is the tariff, it is end-to-end. If you need to leave Plekhanovskaya to Tolmachevskoye Highway, it will take you 45 minutes and 35 rubles. Under these conditions, there's no other way to get there. This attracts passengers in good earnest,” said Vyacheslav Nevezhin, General Director of Express Suburban JSC.

The attractiveness of the railway increases against the backdrop of growing car traffic.

“Our supply chains are changing, there is a reorientation to the east, tourist destinations are changing. Over the past year, traffic on federal highways has increased by 20%, on regional highways by 10%. Accordingly, the traffic density on roads changes,” says Igor Miller, Deputy Minister of Transport and Road Facilities of the Novosibirsk Region.

Among other things, this affects the accident rate, the official added. At the same time, IEDT calculated that the railway maintains a high level of safety. The mortality rate is up to 16.9 times lower compared to motor transport.

Long term traffic

IEDT has prepared a forecast plan for the development of passenger transportation in suburban-urban traffic using Lastochka-type trains. The directions considered were Inya-Vostochnaya – Berdsk, Pashino – Chemskoy, Novosibirsk-Glavny – Tolmachevo Airport.

The prospective volume of traffic by 2035 is estimated at 88 pairs of trains per day (the service interval will be up to 20 minutes during peak hours), including route Inya-Vostochnaya – Berdsk - 40 pairs, Pashino – Chemskoy - 24 pairs, Novosibirsk-Gl. – Tolmachevo Airport - 24 pairs.
