IEDT CEO on the Prospects for Increasing Grain Cargo Transportation by Rail

Analytics on cargo turnover in the Azov–Black Sea basin ports was ранее presented at the International Transport and Logistics Forum in Saint Petersburg by the CEO of JSC “Institute for Transport Economics and Development” (IEDT), Sergey Rumyantsev. He отдельно noted the significance of grain cargo in the overall cargo turnover of the basin’s seaports — in 2025, according to the data he presented, it accounted for 17%. Only oil cargo had a higher share — 54%.

The expert also presented the shares of cargo types that arrived at the Azov–Black Sea basin ports by rail. According to the results of 2025, 83.7 million tons were delivered there via the Russian Railways network. The total cargo turnover in the basin’s seaports last year amounted to 259.7 million tons. Capacity utilization stood at 64%, according to IEDT.

As noted by S. Rumyantsev, grain cargo is seen as promising in terms of increasing its transportation via railway infrastructure.

“I would draw attention to grain cargo, which accounts for only 17% of total cargo turnover. Of this, only 23% is transported by rail. This is our further joint potential. The region is certainly interested in this — in terms of reducing the burden on road infrastructure. Moreover, the electronic waybill will be introduced this year, which will bring all road transportation into the legal framework. Therefore, there is potential here,” the expert explained.
