SKZD Management Assesses Modernization of Novorossiysk Transport Hub
The first phase of the federal investment project for the comprehensive development of the Novorossiysk transport hub is set to be completed by the end of this year. During a working trip, the management of the North Caucasus Railway (SKZD) assessed the progress of railway infrastructure upgrades leading to Russia’s main Black Sea gateway.
SCALE OF MODERNIZATION
The importance of the project is hard to overestimate, especially in light of forecasted cargo traffic growth toward the Azov–Black Sea ports, emphasized Sergey Zadorin, Head of the North Caucasus Railway. “This requires a completely different level of throughput capacity and technical support for freight transportation, which is why the company has been carrying out modernization in this direction since 2007. Over 680 km of second main tracks have already been built between Kotelnikovo and Vyshesteblievskaya,” he noted.
According to forecasts by the Institute for Transport Economics and Development, by 2030, freight volumes bound for the ports of the Azov–Black Sea Basin will reach 152 million tonnes per year. As Vladimir Doroshenko, Head of Novorossiysk Station, stated, the station's freight handling capacity is expected to increase from 33 million tonnes in 2024 to 43 million tonnes annually as a result of the project.
