Which Russian cities will be connected by high-speed railways?
High-speed railways create conditions for technological and economic development
Construction of Russia’s first high-speed railway (HSR) — the Moscow–Saint Petersburg line — is set to begin in the middle of this year. This project opens up significant opportunities for the transport sector and other areas of the economy. Industry will adopt breakthrough technologies, new production facilities will emerge in the regions, and people will be able to commute hundreds of kilometers from their homes to work.
The development of high-speed railways offers numerous advantages. “Firstly, it improves the convenience and accessibility of transportation, while ensuring safety and reliability. Secondly, based on international experience, the launch of high-speed services leads to a redistribution of passenger flows, greater territorial connectivity, and increased population mobility,” the Institute for Transport Economics and Development told Rossiyskaya Gazeta. “Thirdly, it will reduce traffic on existing railway lines. And fourth, the creation of high-tech transport systems will stimulate the country's economic growth.”
“To build HSR, advanced railway construction technologies and a new rolling stock fleet designed for high speeds are required. The project involves the use of the latest scientific and technological advances in both transport and information technologies,” IEDT noted. “Furthermore, the organization of high-speed rail services fosters the development of technologies in related industries such as mechanical engineering, by enabling domestic enterprises to manufacture cutting-edge equipment that meets global standards.”
