Is it possible to instantly determine the fate of railway real estate? Certainly not — a comprehensive analysis is essential. This was the focus of the Technical and Technological Council held on July 11, chaired by Valery Yakovlev, Chief Engineer of the South Ural Railway.
In his opening remarks, Valery Anatolyevich noted: «… “In 2025, the Institute for Transport Economics and Development (IEDT) acted as a technological expert and developed standards for 15 types of facilities. These include duty posts, control points, diesel and sewage pumping stations, boiler houses, communication and water supply infrastructure, transformer and traction substations, wastewater treatment plants, water reservoirs, heating units, workshops, production facilities, and depots. Our goal is to jointly find balanced solutions for managing real estate more efficiently…”
As Fyodor Bazhanov, Head of the Railway Property Management Service, explained, a campaign to identify unused and inefficiently used assets has been underway since 2023. Based on IEDT’s expert-developed standards, 1,140 real estate assets across the railway’s territory have been analyzed. Of these, 1,224 (85%) were deemed sufficient, 117 (8%) were classified as potentially redundant, and 99 (7%) as insufficient.
