By 2035, the volume of container freight traffic on the Russian Railways (RZD) network is projected to reach 10–12 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), which is 27–52% higher compared to the results of 2024. This is stated in a thematic digest prepared by the Institute for Transport Economics and Development (IEDT) of RZD. The average annual growth rate through 2035 is expected to be approximately 3.4%.
According to Roman Martyshkin, Deputy Head of IEDT’s Center for Macroeconomics and Forecasting Methodology, around 60% of the total volume will account for foreign trade shipments — including imports, exports, and transit — while the remaining 40% will be domestic shipments. For comparison, in 2024, 7.9 million TEU were transported via the RZD network (+6% year-on-year), of which 3.1 million were domestic.
