Experts from the Institute for Transport Economics and Development have also forecasted significant changes in the structure of transported goods in the coming years, particularly a growth in container shipments.
- "Naturally, the throughput capacity of the Eastern Polygon will soon fall short, even with current growth. By 2032, we will reach 270 million tons, but with the increase in export cargo flow, we will likely be discussing target figures of 300 or even 350 million tons. This is entirely feasible, considering the structure of cargo flows," said Irina Magnushevskaya, General Director of IEDT. She emphasized that simple infrastructural improvements are no longer sufficient, and capital investments are now necessary. The focus should shift toward creating new lines rather than modernizing existing ones. Additionally, the development of border crossings, such as Zabaikalsk, Naushki, and the new jointly built transition with China, Jalinda-Mohe, is crucial for the Eastern Polygon's future.
